William Kidd
My work consists of wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic bowls, vessels, plates, jars and sculptures. Some of these forms remain in their original, symmetrical form while others are altered and textured to give the illusion that they were possibly formed by nature. I produce all of the work in my studio as an independent artist.
I have worked as a ceramic artist for 25 years. In my early years as a potter, I threw many different types of forms- both traditional as well as experimental. My recent work is becoming much more sculptural and has a very organic quality to it.
Much of my thrown symmetrical forms are hand-carved using simple wire loop tools. Other pieces begin on the wheel and are later altered by paddling and hand building, creating a more organic form. I use stains and glazes mixed in the studio from raw materials as well as commercial underglazes. I sincerely enjoy creating objects with clay and this passion and energy radiates from within me into the work that I create.
